作詞・作曲
イングランドとスコットランドの国境付近の地域で生まれたと言われていますが、厳密には分かっていません。
あくまでも伝説になりますが、イングランド王ヘンリー8世（Henry VIII 1491-1547）が恋人で後の王妃アン・ブーリンの為に作曲したという説がありますが、否定的なコメントが多いようです。
Greensleeves グリーンスリーブス
Greensleevesはイングランドの民謡です。
古い曲なのでその生い立ちは謎だらけですが、今でも耳にする機会の多い名曲です。
ロマネスカという固執低音による作曲も時代を感じさせます。
『緑』を『不倫』と解釈する人もいるようですが、それも今となっては想像でしかないですね。

メロディーがとても綺麗で、自然豊かな故郷を想う歌なのかな・・・、などと思いながら歌詞を見ると大違い！
あたなたつれなく私を捨てた
そうか、失恋の歌なんだ？
貴方が望むものすべてを差し出そう
貴方の愛が得られるなら
この命も土地のすべても差し出そう
忘れ去ることのできない程の想い、未練？
何だかすごい歌詞ですね。
土地を差し出せば振り向いてくれるような女性なのか、などと考えてしまうのは下衆の勘繰りでしょうか？
メロディーにも疑問が、私の記憶にあったのは『my love, you』の部分の音が『ラシ♭ラ』なんですが、楽譜を見ると『ラシラ』になってます。
どうやら前者がエオリア旋法で後者がドリア旋法らしく、両方のバージョンが存在するようです。
色々と面白いですね。
