Scarborough Fair　スカボロー・フェア

作曲

メロディーには数多くのバージョンがあり、多くの場合ドリアン旋法によるメロディーで歌われていました。
これは良く知られているメロディーとは全く違うものです。
有名なメロディーは英国のシンガー・ソングライターであるユアン・マッコール（本名：James Henry Miller,19151989）が英国の元鉱山労働者マーク アンダーソン（Mark Anderson,1874–1953）から収集したもので、20世紀に多くのミュージシャンによって録音されました。

作詞

作詞者は分からないのですが、フランシス・ジェームス・チャイルド（Francis James Child,1825-1896）がチャイルド・バラード#2として収集した「エルフィン・ナイト」というスコットランドのバラードと共通点があるようで、これは1670年まで遡ります。
歌詞の中には「縫い目のないシャツを作る」とか、それを「乾いた井戸で洗う」などの無理難題が並べられていて、それらが達成できれば再び恋人になれるだろうと記されています。

管理人がこの曲を初めて聞いたのはサイモン&ガーファンクルのアルバムからでした。
『スカボロー・フェア／詠唱』というタイトルで、ユアン・マッコール版の『スカボロー・フェア』をベースにオリジナルのメロディーが加えられています。
映画『卒業』で使われた有名な曲なので、曲のイメージも映画に引っ張られている気もします。
ユアン・マッコール版のメロディーそのままでも十分に美しい曲ですね。
ちなみにスカボローは海辺の町で、そこで行われていたフェア（市）はイングランドの全土から商人が集まるとても重要なイベントだったようです。
