作曲
作曲者はイギリスの作曲家のエドワード・エルガー（Sir Edward William Elgar, 1857–1934）です。
彼の有名な作品には、管弦楽曲『エニグマ変奏曲』や『威風堂々行進曲』などがあります。
Land of Hope and Glory
希望と栄光の国
Land of Hope and Glory（希望と栄光の国）は1901年に作曲、1902年に作詞されたイギリスの愛国歌です。
エドワード・エルガーによって管弦楽のための行進曲集『Pomp and Circumstance 威風堂々』が1901年から1930年にかけて5番までが作曲され、6番は未完成のまま後に補筆されて全曲が完成しています。
まず『威風堂々』の1番が1901年に完成されて同年の10月に初演されています。
これを聴いたエドワード7世から「この旋律は素晴しい歌曲になるだろう」と言われます。
1901年にヴィクトリア女王が崩御すると、エドワード7世の戴冠の準備が進められ、エルガーは依頼に応じてベンソンと共に『Coronation Ode 戴冠式頌歌』の作曲に取り組みます。
この『戴冠式頌歌』の最後の6番目の曲として、『威風堂々』の1番のメロディーを使った曲『希望と栄光の国 Land of hope and glory』が誕生します。
ところがエドワード7世の病気により戴冠式が延期となり、エルガーはコーラス部の4節までを『戴冠式頌歌』と共通にした新しい曲を仕上げ、1902年6月にクララ・バットの歌唱によって初演されます。

管理人コメント
前述の通りで歌詞も別の２バージョンがあり、合唱編曲されたものもあり、行進曲集『威風堂々』の6番をそのままに『希望と栄光の国』と称して演奏したりと、なかなかの混乱ぶりですが、広く愛されている証拠であると理解します。
YouTubeの演奏も多様ですが、『戴冠式頌歌の6番 希望と栄光の国』の最初の歌詞を歌うのが多いように思います。
イベントとかで皆で大合唱する感じで素敵です。
