Sweet Afton（アフトン川の流れ）はイギリスのスコットランドの歌です。
タイトルは『Flow Gently, Sweet Afton』や『Afton Water』とも呼ばれています。
この歌詞はスコットランドのアフトン川を描写した抒情詩です。
この歌には全く違うメロディーが存在し、一つはスコットランドで歌われた民謡によるもの、もう一つがアメリカで作曲されたものです。

作曲

スコットランドで流行ったバージョンはスコットランドの民謡のメロディーであり、作曲者は分かりません。
アメリカのバージョンは、アメリカの弁護士であり牧師、作曲家のジョナサン・エドワーズ・スピルマン（Jonathan Edwards Spilman,1812-1896）です。

作詞

作詞者はスコットランドの詩人であり作詞家のロバート・バーンズ（Robert Burns, 1759–1796）です。
彼はスコットランドの国民的詩人として広く認められていて、スコットランド語で書いた詩人の中で最もよく知られていますが、彼の著作の多くは英語の「軽いスコットランド方言」で書かれてるため、スコットランド以外の人にも読みやすいのが特徴です。
アフトン川を渡る橋の上にはロバート・バーンズと彼の詩を記念する銘板があります。
