作曲
作曲者はイギリスの作曲家で指揮者のジョセフ・バーンビー（Sir Joseph Barnby, 1838–1896）です。
Sweet And Low 邦題：そっとやさしく
Sweet And Low（邦題：そっとやさしく）はイギリスの歌です。
歌詞が書かれたのが1849年で、それにメロディーが付けられてのが1865年なので、少し間が空きました。
メロディーは元々パートソング（合唱曲）として作られました。
歌詞は、西の海の風よ甘く低く吹きなさい、私のかわいい子が眠っている間にと語ります。

本当に柔らかい、美しい歌です。
この歌のテーマからは外れてしまいますが、ギリシャ神話ではゼピュロス（Zephyros）と呼ばれる西風の神がいて、東西南北の風の神の中では最も温和な神であり、春の訪れを告げる豊穣の風として知られています。
大陸に暖かい空気を運んでくれる風ですね。
西風をタイトルに持つ古い歌は沢山あります。
