Waltzing Matilda（ワルチング・マチルダ）は1895年に作られたオーストラリアの歌です。
この曲の誕生の経緯は「作曲」の項で説明します。
歌詞は、野営をしていた放浪労働者が、迷い込んだ羊を捕まえて食べてしまい、警察官に追われるという騒動の物語です。
タイトルの『Waltzing Matilda』は、寝袋を背負って歩いて旅をするといった意味合いです。
この曲はオーストラリアの「非公式の国歌」と言われるほどに愛されています。
この曲の経緯を順に説明します。
元の曲と言われているのが、スコットランドの詩人ロバート・タナヒルの詩『Thou Bonnie Wood Of Craigielea 汝の美しい森のクレイギーリー』に、スコットランドの作曲家ジェームズ・バー（James Barr,1779–1860) が曲を付けたものです。
これを元にオーストラリアの作曲家トーマス・バルチ（Thomas Edward Bulch,1862–1930）の行進曲『Craigielee クレイギーリー』が作られます。
このトーマス・バルチの行進曲『クレイギーリー』のメロディーを記憶だけで演奏したクリスティーナ・マクファーソンの友人の婚約者が、『Waltzing Matilda』の作詞者であるバンジョー・パターソンです。
彼はメロディーを聴くと、すぐにそれに合わせた詩を作りました。
作詞者はオーストラリアの詩人でありジャーナリスト、著作家のバンジョー・パターソン（Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson,1864-1941）です。
彼はオーストラリア奥地での生活に焦点を当てた詩を多く残しています。
『Waltzing Matilda』は彼の代表作のひとつです。
「バンジョー」は彼のペンネームですが、元は父親の農場で彼が愛用していた馬の名前です。

タイトルを見て、ワルツを踊るマチルダさんを思い浮かべたんですが、全く違いました。
