作曲者はアメリカの弁護士で教会賛美歌の作曲家のチャールズ・クロザット・コンバース（Charles Crozat Converse, 1832–1918）です。

What A Friend We Have In Jesus（いつくしみ深き）は作詞が1855年、作曲が1868年のアメリカの歌です。
説教者のジョセフ・M・スクリヴンが、カナダ滞在中にアイルランドに住んでいた母親を慰めるために書いた詩であり、讃美歌として人気があり多くの言語のバージョンがあります。
日本では文部省唱歌となった杉谷代水作詞の『星の界』や、川路柳虹作詞の『星の世界』などでも知られています。
作詞
作詞者はアイルランド生まれのカナダの詩人ジョセフ・M・スクリヴン（Joseph Medlicott Scriven, 1819–1886）です。
彼は『What A Friend We Have In Jesus』の作者として最も知られています。
